Matt Abrams is no longer director of Camp Kawaga. Ms. Hill's son's unfortunate experience likely contributed to the decision to remove Mr. Abrams from his position at the camp.
Incredible Camp
Camp kawaga is a very special place. It has changed my whole family being a 3rd generation camper I callus not be happier with the facility's and the counselors
If you care about your son, BEWARE ...
My son came within minutes of dying due to the neglect of Matt Abrams. About 6 weeks into his stay, he began vomiting. He was left in the nurses station for 3 days in 100+ degree heat, vomiting day & night. Matt Abrams said he was too busy to take my son to the hospital (per what the nurse said she recommended). No doctor on staff, so by the time my son was taken to the ER, he was completely septic with a ruptured appendix & it took 3 hours to get an IV due to the extreme levels of dehydration.
Camp Kawaga is a one of kind experience for boys in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. The camp is on the Minocqua chain of lakes and sits on a large lake front property. I went to Kawaga at 10 years old and have been there every summer since, starting as a camper, then a counselor and now as a member of the Alumni Association. For over 25 years, Kawaga has been one of the most influential forces in my life and it makes me so happy to see if thriving and still impacting so many lives for its more than 100 year existence.
My son has been going to Kawaga for a few years and raves about his experiences at camp.
While this camp may have great facilities & programs, don't be fooled... their lack of compassion & concern for my, & your son's, well being is ZERO!
Additionally, during my son's absence from the camp and early departure, the other kids took almost all his belongings. What remained of his belongings (about 1/5 what he took) were shipped back to me at a cost of $189!
One more point, separate from Matt leaving my son, for days, to die: During my mid-point visit, I found my son left alone, to sleep, in a cabin with urine covered mattresses. The stench was overwhelming. No human being, let alone MY or YOUR child, should be put into this situation, especially at the price paid to go to Camp Kawaga!
Kawaga fills all my needs for a camp. The cabins are nicely furnished, not too big, not to fancy, but still spice that rustic feel. Campers can socialize in the morning at different spots, like the famous piazza on the Sioux Hill. Breakfast is not rushed, and campers eat and prepare for the day. On to the activities. Kawaga has activities like Clubs, where campers can learn more about there activities and improve. They also feature Evening Programs, which is some campers favorite parts. EP's are incredible all camp games, each different on each night. Kawaga also does a very nice job with their schedule. They somehow make active activities all day, but give jury enough time for kids to play there own sports. Kawaga is the place to be.
He goes for 4 weeks and begs to go for the full 8 week session.
The first call I received was from the HOSPITAL, not the camp. The doctor gave me 10 minute to decide on surgery to save my son's life! While Matt appeared cooperative, he repeatedly voiced annoyance about my son's medical needs interrupting his camp program.
